How Reverse Osmosis Wash Systems Work

Dec 12th 2019

Using a commercial reverse osmosis system is a great way to reduce waste, save money, and provide a better wash for your customers. A reverse osmosis car wash removes the dissolved solids such as salt, calcium, magnesium, and other minerals from your rinse water to prevent spotting. That way you don’t need to blow- or hand-dry vehicles to eliminate residual spotting.

Want to know more? Here’s how reverse osmosis wash systems work:

What Is Osmosis?

In order to understand how reverse osmosis works, you first need to understand the osmosis process. From there, you’ll be able to see how reversing the process makes your commercial reverse osmosis system function.

Imagine a tub of water split in half with a semipermeable membrane. On one half of the membrane is seawater and on the other half is pure water. Osmosis is the process that will eventually lead to both sides of the tub containing the same concentration of saltwater after enough time passes.

Osmosis is when the molecules of a weaker, less concentrated solution naturally move into the stronger, more concentrated solution until the two sides are equalized. For example, the reason humans can’t drink seawater is that the salt content pulls water from other parts of the body to the stomach in order to dilute and equalize the seawater, causing dehydration.

How Reverse Osmosis Works

Now that you understand osmosis, you’re probably wondering how a commercial reverse osmosis system works.

To put it simply, the system uses powerful pumps to reverse the natural flow of water, so instead of the weaker solution moving into the stronger solution, the reverse happens: the “seawater” or other stronger solution is forced through the semipermeable membrane, leaving the dissolved solids behind.

After the process, you’re left with pure, mineral-free rinse water that won’t leave behind residue on vehicles. The water that contains all of the dissolved solids is either re-filtered or removed from the system and drained.

Our Innovative Reverse Osmosis Solutions

Not every reverse osmosis car wash is the same. If you’re looking for the most efficient and sustainable commercial reverse osmosis system, you can't go wrong with one of our cutting-edge models.

As you might expect, there’s a whole lot more to reverse osmosis than just pumping water through a semipermeable membrane to filter out the undesirable dissolved solids. While that’s the most simple explanation, there’s no denying that some reverse osmosis systems are better than others. We can confidently say that ours are the best.
